Wrestlers Protest: The Delhi Police will drop the FIR they had filed against the wrestlers in protest, sources told India Today TV. On May 28, a FIR was filed under many sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against the organisers of the wrestlers’ protest, including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia.
Wrestlers March in Protest Against Accused WFI Chief
The wrestlers attempted to march from Jantar Mantar in Delhi to the parliament on May 28 during the opening of the new parliament complex in protest of Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, who is accused of sex harassment. The wrestlers were subsequently taken into custody by the police, who later filed a FIR against them. Vinesh Phogat responded to the FIR by saying a new chapter in history was being written. “It took the Delhi Police seven days to file a FIR for sexual harassment against Brij Bhushan, but it took less than seven hours to submit a FIR for peaceful protest on our part. Bajrang Punia Questions Detention Amidst Legal Charges
Bajrang Punia reacted to the imprisonment by asking, “Police have kept me in their custody. They are remaining silent. Have I broken any laws? Brij Bhushan ought to have been locked up. Why are we still in custody? The wrestlers were accused of violating Sections 147 (rioting), 149 (illegal assembly), 186 (obstructing a public servant from performing his or her duties), 188 (disobeying an order duly issued by a public servant), 332 (voluntarily causing harm to a public servant to prevent him or her from performing his or her duties), and 353 (using criminal force to prevent a public servant from performing his or her duties) of the Indian Penal Code. Additionally, the demonstrators were charged with violating Section 3 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act.
