Ligue 1: On Kylian Mbappe’s comeback from a post-World Cup vacation, Paris Saint-Germain lost to Rennes in a surprise setback. After losing to Argentina’s Lionel Messi’s team in the World Cup final, Mbappe was given a little rest before going back to club football. During the club’s 1-0 loss to Rennes in Ligue 1 on Sunday, Kylian Mbappe shockingly missed a chance off Lionel Messi’s assist, infuriating the 35-year-old legend’s ardent supporters.
Kylian Mbappe messes up the pass
After the home team had scored the first goal, Mbappe had a great chance to tie the game for the Parisians five minutes later. PSG seemed to be in control of the match until Messi dived to reclaim the ball and lay on a threaded pass to the Frenchman. The sensational 24-year-old received the pass, dashed into the penalty area, and abruptly fired from 16 yards out over the crossbar.
PSG suffered their second loss since the Qatar World Cup 2022 break when right-back Hamari Traore, the Rennes captain, scored the game’s lone goal at the hour mark. After the loss, PSG boss Christophe Galtier remarked “We need to find our game back. We knew this would be a difficult game, and it was. We had the ball, but we failed to threaten them. Rennes defended with too much ease.”

Since the World Cup ended, PSG has had trouble winning games as its best players try to regain their rhythm. Neymar performed similarly to Messi in terms of having little effect on the game. Gianluigi Donnarumma and composed midfielder Warren Zare-Emery, 16 years old, have been PSG’s star performers. On Thursday, January 19, the Mbappe-Messi team will play a Saudi All-Star XI which may include accomplished player Cristiano Ronaldo and will be hoping to be more effective.
