Lionel Messi has just made a huge revelation regarding his future with the Argentina national team. Many fans and experts were trying to predict his next move and whether he will play in the World Cup or not.
Not only Eight-time Balon-Do’or winner has answered the FIFA World Cup 2026 participation question, but he has also answered whether he will be a part of the Paris Olympics 2024 or not.
Messi is scheduled to play in Copa America starting at the end of the month and will finish a few days before the Paris Olympics. So, it will be quite hectic for players and many teams opt to go for a younger squad in the Olympics.
No Olympics!
It looks like Argentina will be doing the same and Messi won’t be a part of the upcoming Olympics event. The Inter Miami forward won a gold medal with Argentina in the 2008 Beijing Games.
This time he is choosing to opt out of the event and has discussed it with Argentina’s Olympics coach, Javier Mascherano.
He stated “I spoke with Mascherano, and we immediately agreed on the situation. It’s a difficult moment, because there’s the Copa America, and that would mean two or three consecutive months away from my club. At my age, I don’t want to play everything and I need to make the right choices.”
Lionel Messi Eyeing World Cup 2026?
While Messi has stated that he would like to manage his workload and how he plays, he has not closed doors for the upcoming World Cup. The current World Champion will have the opportunity to play his sixth World Cup, the most by any player.
He stated “It’s great to have records and continue to achieve things but I won’t take part in a World Cup just to say I’ve done six. If I feel good and everything is in place for me to be there, fine, but I won’t go just to go.
Messi further stated “It’s very difficult to imagine what can happen because it’s still two years away. I don’t need to commit right now to whether or not I’ll be there.”
