Lionel Messi: For the upcoming Fifa World Cup 2022 in Qatar, Argentina’s squad has finally been announced. Lionel Scaloni, the head coach, has mixed more young players like Julian Alvarez of Manchester City with veterans like Messi, 35, and Angel di Maria, 34.
Lionel Messi to lead these Premier leauge stars
Despite not playing since October 9, injured Roma forward Paulo Dybala, 28, also received a call up. On November 22, Argentina will face-off Saudi Arabia in Group C. They will take on Poland and Mexico later.
The group of Premier League players includes Brighton midfielder Alexis MacAllister, Christian Romero of Tottenham, Lisandro Martinez of Manchester United, and goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez of Aston Villa. Alejandro Garnacho, 18, a winger for Manchester United, is not included despite being called up to the senior team for the first time in March but having yet to obtain his first cap.
Argentina is unbeaten from 35 games
The biggest surprise was Dybala’s inclusion. After suffering a strange thigh injury while attempting a penalty for Roma, the former Juventus forward was predicted to miss the competition. Prior to then, Dybala had been in excellent form, scoring in five straight games.
Argentina, the defending Copa America champion, has gone 35 games without a loss. They last won the World Cup in 1986, and in 1990 and 2014, they came in second. Scaloni said , “They are all proud to be picked and to wear this jersey.”
