Lionel Messi, the talented Argentine footballer currently playing for Paris Saint-Germain, further has added another remarkable trophy to his collection of accolades by securing two esteemed awards at the prestigious Laureus World Sports Awards ceremony held on Monday. Messi was honoured with the titles of Laureus World Sportsman and World Team of the Year, solidifying his status as a true sporting legend.
Lionel Messi becomes first to clinch two awards
In a historic achievement, the 35-year-old veteran, who guided Argentina to World Cup triumph in Qatar last year, has etched his name in the record books by becoming the first athlete ever to claim both awards in a single year. Another outstanding athlete, Chinese freeskier Gu Ailing, who secured two gold medals at the Beijing Winter Olympic Games in the previous year, was bestowed with the prestigious Action Sportsperson of the Year award.
Securing the award for the second time, Lionel Messi, the esteemed captain who led his team to victory in the World Cup, triumphed over a formidable lineup of nominees to claim the prestigious Laureus World Sportsman title. Previously sharing the honour with Lewis Hamilton in 2020, Messi emerged victorious once again, surpassing other esteemed contenders such as Rafael Nadal, a 21-time tennis Grand Slam winner, reigning Formula One world champion Max Verstappen, pole vault world record holder Mondo Duplantis, basketball sensation Stephen Curry, and French football star Kylian Mbappe.
What did Lionel Messi say?
Messi stated, “It’s an honour, especially since the Laureus World Sports Awards are taking place this year in Paris, the city that welcomed me and my family. I would like to thank all my teammates, not only those of the national team but also those of PSG. I have not accomplished anything alone and I am grateful to be able to share all this with them.”
