South African seamer Lungi Ngidi will miss the upcoming three-match Twenty20 International series against India due to a left lateral ankle sprain. Ngidi, 27, is also facing a fitness race for the opening test of the tour scheduled to begin on December 26. Beuran Hendricks, 33, will replace Ngidi in the T20 squad. Hendricks, with 19 T20 appearances, will contend for the specialist seamer role alongside less experienced options like Ottniel Baartman, Nandre Burger, Gerald Coetzee, and Lizaad Williams. Kagiso Rabada, the premier fast bowler, has been rested for the T20 series.
Tour Schedule and Format Transition
India’s tour of South Africa will commence with three T20 matches in Durban, Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), and Johannesburg. The format will then transition to three One Day Internationals scheduled from December 17 to 21, to be played in the latter two venues and Paarl. The first test is set to begin on December 26 in Pretoria, followed by the second on January 3 at Newlands in Cape Town. Ngidi’s absence adds a layer of challenge for the South African pace attack as they prepare to face India in the upcoming series.”
