Magnus Carlsen

Magnus Carlsen completely dominated the final day of the Rapid and Blitz tournament to secure the trophy for himself.

Magnus Carlsen: It was one of the best comebacks you will ever see on the chessboard. Carlsen had a mammoth task of dethroning Wei Yi from the first spot on the final day of the Blitz tournament.

Carlsen was 2.5 points behind Wei Yi with only 9 rounds left to play. But in a emphatic fashion, he won 9 straight rounds to clinch the top spot and that 40,000 USD Dollars prize money.

He defeated all 9 players including 3 Indian prodigies to secure the Rapid and Blitz trophy. It was an incredible streak by Carlsen who was the oldest competitor in the tournament and wanted to teach the young ones “A thing or two.”

Magnus Carlsen Incredible Streak

Carlsen was in second position by the end of the Norway round. He was 2.5 points behind Chinese competitor Wei Yi, who had almost secured the tournament. It would have taken an incredible fight back to dethrone him from the top spot.

“I knew that if I had a good day today that I had a chance. I could feel from the second game (on Sunday) onwards that I was a lot calmer than I was yesterday. So I felt I was in with a shot. I also knew that I had done this before in 2017 at the World Blitz. When I came in 2.5 points behind Sergey Karjakin and I erased that deficit in four games. Beating him in the fourth game. It was exactly the same today. felt very calm today,” Carlsen stated.

R Praggnanandhaa Solid Performance

R Praggnanandhaa came in fourth in the standings with 19 points. He was one of the few players who defeated Carlsen in the tournament. He was in third position ahead of the Poland round.

Arjun Erigaisi finished in the fifth spot with 18 points while Gukesh D was in the 10th spot with 12.5 points to his name.
