Martin Guptill: In order to seek playing chances elsewhere, New Zealand Cricket has decided to release seasoned batsman Martin Guptill from his central contract. Guptill, 36, has played a significant role in New Zealand white ball teams for the previous 13 years, but he recently lost the favour of the national selectors and was replaced by 23-year-old opener Finn Allen.
Guptill is third highest scorer in one-day international runs with 7,346 and is New Zealand’s leading run scorer in Twenty20 matches with more than 3,500 runs. He was not, however, included in the New Zealand team for the T20 series against India, which concluded on Tuesday with India winning the series 1-0 following a stalemate in game three.
NZ Cricket board responds to the situation
In response to his request, Guptill was immediately released from his contract with New Zealand Cricket.
NZC executive David White said that, “We understand Martin’s position and He’s been a fantastic batsman for us for a long period of time, and we certainly don’t wish to stand in his way as he explores other opportunities.
“Martin’s been a giant of the white ball game, a committed and well-respected member of the Black Caps and has earned the right to play out his career on his own terms.”
Trent Boult and Colin released as well
Although Guptill has said he still wants to play for the international team, it appears unlikely given that the selectors are compelled to give preference to players who are under contract.
The central contract of fast bowler Trent Boult was also recently terminated. Despite participating in the T20 World Cup, he was not chosen for the India series. Along with him, Colin De Grandhomme’s contract was terminated as well.
