Martinique: An international football player and his girlfriend were detained in France after being discovered travelling with 100 kilogrammes of cocaine in their luggage. After being discovered in possession of the narcotics at Charles de Gaulle airport, Jean-Manuel Nedra, a 10-year member of Martinique’s national squad, was detained on Sunday in Paris.
Jean Nedra currently in pre-trial detention
According to the reports, the Aiglon du Lamentin midfielder was introduced before an investigating magistrate on Wednesday. As his partner was freed with “judicial supervision,” Nedra was detained in “pre-trial detention” while he awaited trial.
The player’s club said “Without knowing his degree of involvement, we learned that one of our players was arrested at Roissy for drug smuggling. Let us be stronger than ever and united to continue our work of education through sport, to fight against this scourge, to protect and alert our young people to the risks, consequences and abuses of this environment.”
Severe punishment on cards for the player?
The athlete and his wife were allegedly travelling in a “personal capacity” when they were detained. Fans were informed that bringing drugs into the Middle Eastern nation of Qatar may result in them receiving the death penalty before to the World Cup there.
At the very least, they warned that the punishment would be “serious,” even if the sole option was life in prison or, in certain cases, the death sentence for repeat offenders.
