IPL 2023: Punjab Kings (PBKS) team has received a setback as one of their important overseas players, Jonny Bairstow, has decided to skip the IPL 2023 to completely recover for the Ashes tournament. The IPL is scheduled to start from March 31 and end on May 28. However, the Ashes series will be held in England, starting from June 16, which is why Bairstow wants to focus on his recovery from the injury he sustained last year in September.
Jonny Bairstow missed T20 World Cup last year
Jonny Bairstow, a crucial member of the England cricket team, had to miss out on the T20 World Cup last year due to multiple injuries that he suffered in a freak accident at a golf course in September. He had sustained fractures, dislocated his ankle, and suffered ligament damage. Since then, he has been unable to participate in the New Zealand and Pakistan series with the England team as well.
As a result, Punjab Kings will miss Bairstow’s contribution to their squad in IPL 2023, as he focuses on preparing himself for the upcoming Ashes. Jonny Bairstow, who underwent surgery and rehabilitation for his leg injury, has been on his road to recovery and returned to training last month.
Bairstow to skip IPL 2023
However, the Punjab Kings team will have to do without the explosive batter in the upcoming IPL season, which begins on March 31, as Bairstow has prioritized his full recovery and return to competitive cricket with his County team Yorkshire.
Jonny Bairstow had previously played for Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL before being purchased by Punjab Kings for Rs 6.75 crore in the 2022 IPL Auction. Bairstow played 14 games for the SRH, scoring a total of 253 runs. His absence will be missed by the team heavily as he is renowned for his ability to score runs quickly.
