Lionel Messi, the captain of Argentina, has declared that the 2022 World Cup in Qatar will be his final appearance in the competition. Messi led from the front and carried the Albiceleste to victory, enabling him to realise his dream of winning the World Cup for them in Qatar. In the championship game versus France, the 35-year-old scored twice and took home both the Golden Ball and the trophy. Before Argentina’s friendly match against Australia in Beijing, Messi told the Chinese media that the 2022 World Cup will be his last and that he won’t participate in the 2026 World Cup, which will be held in the United States and Mexico.

In an interview with Titan Sports before Argentina’s friendly match against Australia in Beijing, Messi said, “I think not. This was my last World Cup.” He added, “I’ll see how things go but in principle, I won’t go to the next World Cup.” Messi also paid appreciation to Pep Guardiola, who is currently the manager of Manchester City after winning an unprecedented triple with the team lately. Messi claimed to be in constant contact with the City manager and expressed satisfaction with his accomplishment. The 35-year-old praised Guardiola as the world’s top trainer.

‘Pep and I still communicate frequently, so we talk a lot. I’m thrilled for him since he recently won the UEFA Champions League,’ Messi said in an interview with a Chinese sports publication. ‘He is the best coach in the world, and although, in my opinion, he didn’t need to win this Champions League title to prove that, it further demonstrates that he is the world’s top coach, which is an achievement he deserves.’ After his contract with PSG expired, Messi just stated that he will be heading to Inter Miami and playing in the MLS the following season.
