Mitchell Starc: In the second Test at Melbourne, Australia has thrashed the visiting team by an innings and 182 runs. Mitchell Starc warns Proteas batter
Despite the fact that the game has remained mainly one-sided thus far, tensions rose on Day 4 of the match when Mitchell Starc interrupted his delivery to caution batter Theunis de Bruyn against leaving the crease at the non-striker’s end.
Multiple players have utilised the dismissal technique, most widely and informally known as the “Mankad,” and while the rule does not require a batsman to get a warning before being dismissed, many cricketers still prefer to do so. De Bruyn was forewarned by Starc, who could also be heard yelling at the batter on the Stump mike. “Stay in the crease. It’s not that hard. It’s (the crease) there for a reason mate!” Starc said.

Previous controversial instance of mankad
In a recent ODI at Lord’s, Deepti Sharma, a women’s all-rounder for India, stirred controversy when she ran Charlotte Dean out at the non-end striker’s for England’s final wicket, leading to India’s victory in the match as well as the series. Despite the dismissal being lawful, several former and current English cricket players were critical of Deepti.
Ravichandran Ashwin, a male off-spinner for India, has long advocated for the dismissal. He performed a similar outrage-inspiring “Mankad” dismissal of Jos Buttler in the 2019 Indian Premier League.
