Mithali Raj: Former captain of India, Mithali, plans to come out of retirement for the upcoming Women’s IPL, which is anticipated to begin in the first week of March. There are many activities taking on in advance of the first Women’s IPL, and the five participating teams’ identities will probably be announced in the final week of January.
What did Mithali Raj say on WIPL?
As the veteran has long served as the face of women’s cricket in India, news of Mithali’s involvement would undoubtedly promote the competition. In June of last year, the elegant right-hander announced his retirement, but he still left the door open for the Women’s IPL.
In a July 2022 interview on the ICC’s 100% Cricket podcast with former England player Isha Guha and former New Zealand off spinner Frankie Mackay, Mithali made the first indication that she would come out of retirement for the WIPL.
The 40-year-old has played for the nation in 89 T20Is, scoring 2,364 runs at a respectable average of 37.52. She last participated in a T20I match for India against England at home in 2019. Before putting her boots away in June 2022, Mithali played in more ODI and Test matches.
Will Jhulan Goswami join as well?
If former India seamer Jhulan Goswami decides to join, it might be a double treat for the league since Mithali’s presence will undoubtedly be a positive marketing. Jhulan, who led India’s bowling for 20 years, had her final international appearance in the away series against England in 2022.
When asked about her involvement in the WIPL at the time, Jhulan chose to focus on her experience with the Indian cricket team instead.
Since their introduction to Indian cricket two decades ago, Mithali and Jhulan have developed a close bond with supporters not just in India but also all around the world. According to recent sources, up to eight IPL teams have expressed interest in purchasing teams for the WIPL, therefore the coming weeks will be quite exciting.
