Mohammed Shami, an Indian pacer, was trolling during one of the 2023 Cricket World Cup matches. Soon after picking a wicket, a weary Shami was on his knees in the ground. Shami’s physical attributes were exploited by Pakistani troll accounts on social media to incite hatred, claiming that the Indian cricket player, who is of Muslim descent, was not permitted to perform the “Sajda” after setting a bowling record. The word for prostration in Urdu, “sajda,” is used by Muslims worldwide to express gratitude to Allah.
On-field Celebration Controversy
In his response to the trolls, Shami clarified what happened on the pitch and addressed whether or not he really intended to perform a “Sajdah” after taking a wicket. He blasted the trolls and declared that no one could stop him from performing Sajda in India if that was his desire. He went on to say that if someone had prevented him from practicing his religion, he would not be in India.
Media Event and Q&A
Speaking at an Aaj Tak-organized event, Shami was questioned about his feelings after being targeted by Pakistani trolls for his on-field body language. Shami remarked, “If somebody wants to do Sajda, who will stop? I will not stop anybody from your religion, you will not stop anybody from my religion. If I have to do Sajda, I will do it. What is the problem? I say it with pride that I am Muslim.” He added, “I am an Indian, and I say that with pride.”
Personal Approach to Sajda
Shami went on to say that, unlike many Pakistani and other Muslim cricket players, he never performs “Sajda” on the cricket pitch after taking a wicket. Shami said that: “If I have to do Sajda, tell me where to do it, I will do it.” The pacer, who was born in Amroha, claimed that some people use social media only to cause trouble because it gives them access to content. Shami elaborated on his reason for kneeling after taking the wicket, saying, “I was bowling beyond my effort, which is why I was kneeling. I was worn out. Individuals interpreted the gesture differently.”
