1983 World Cup: 25th June 1983, a date that no cricket fan will ever forget as Kapil Dev’s image of holding the World Cup on the Lord’s balcony inspired millions of Indians and made what cricket today is in India.
The victory was just in the field of cricket; it was our victory as a whole nation. India was a team that was supposed to go out in the first round. But that Indian team not only defied the odds but made cricket a religion in India.
Just imagine, if we had not won that World Cup, we would never have Sachin, never have Kohli, and so much more. So, this was not just a World Cup win; it was a defining moment in the history of our country. A moment that changed how our country will work in the next century.
There were magical moments in every match during our World Cup triumph. But some moments are just so special and important that they are worth mentioning.
A World Class Wicket Keeper
A player that really changed the whole scenario of the game for India was Sayed Kirmani. India had the best wicket-keeper batsman in that tournament. A player who was brilliant behind the wickets and could bat too. You will be surprised to learn that a keeper that can bat was a rare concept in previous times.
Kirmani changed the game against Zimbabwe and West Indies from behind the wickets with some crucial knocks here and there.
Inning That Defined An Era
We have heard so many things about this inning, but the sad thing is that we won’t be able to see the inning completely ever. An inning that took India from 17/5 to over 250 runs. That inning can never be replicated ever.
Kapil Dev’s 175 runs in just 138 deliveries, with 16 boundaries and 6 sixes, will be remembered as one of the best innings in a World Cup. It was an inning that kept India’s 1983 World Cup hope alive and later helped us lift the world cup.

After the catch, it was Mohinder Amarnath who changed the game with his bowling. He is one of the only two players to get the Man of the Match award in both the Semi-Finals and Finals of the World Cup, and that is why he is regarded as one of the best all-rounders.
