MS Dhoni and his future in cricket is a mystery right now. The 42-year-old is enjoying his holidays currently. But every fan of his is anxiously waiting for his decision to know whether he will play in IPL 2025
Everyone expected Dhoni to announce his decision in one of the post-match ceremonies during IPL 2024. But as Ruturaj Gaikwad took the captaincy charge, we never saw MS coming out and speaking to the crowd.
However several reports have come out in the last few days suggesting that the 5-time IPL winner is not on the priority retention list of CSK. Reports have further claimed that Dhoni might still play in the IPL but with a huge condition.
Retention List!
According to several media reports, Dhoni will only play for CSK in IPL 2025 if BCCI allows every team to have 5 or 6 retentions. As of now, the CSK owners do not see the wicket-keeper as a priority retention.
The stakeholders in CSK want to retain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Shivam Dube, and Mateesha Pathirana as their first four retentions. Which makes sense considering the age and fitness level of MS Dhoni.
CSK also already has a wicket-keeper in the form of Devon Conway which they might get back using the RTM card. So, Dhoni’s future entirely depends on the meeting between BCCI and IPL owners scheduled to be held this week.
MS Dhoni In New Role?
The reports further suggested that if MS Dhoni is not retained by Chennai Super Kings, we can see him in a new role. Dhoni has always stated that he is grateful to the CSK franchise and will be available for them no matter what.
If the retentions are not allowed, we might see ‘Thala’ as the new mentor for Chennai. Chennai would be glad to have Dhoni in the dressing room and as a part of the leadership staff.
