BCCI: Viacom 18 has grabbed a whopping deal of BCCI TV and streaming rights for the next five years. Jay Shah, secretary of BCCI went to social media platform ‘X’ to announce the news.
It is a massive deal that comes in at a total of Rs.5963 crores. Shah also thanked Disney Star India as the previous media partner of the Indian cricket team. Disney won the media rights back in 2019 for Rs. 6,168 crores.
Viacom18 was against companies like Disney Plus and Sony Sports during the E-auction that took place on Thursday. Sony Pictures India has congratulated the Viacom18 team and slated the auction as transparent and efficient.
Whopping Media Deal By BCCI
Viacom18 has grabbed the rights for all the international and domestic games to be played in India for the next five years. They also won the bidding war for both television and digital media platforms.
The bidding took place in two parts. The first was for the TV media rights with a base price of 20 crore per match. Package B consisted of digital media and was set at the base price of Rs. 25 crore per match.
This win has sealed Viacom18 with the Indian team till March 2028. The cycle will start in September 2023. They will be able to stream and broadcast the bilateral matches in India, The IPL, and the Women’s Premier League.
Unimaginable Numbers
The bidding war was an intense one as all three companies really wanted to make the deal their own. Viacom18 paid Rs. 3101 crores for the digital media rights which equals Rs.35.23 crores per match. They got the television rights for Rs.2862 crores which equals to Rs.32.52 crore per match.
