Javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra, the current Olympic champion, said on Monday that he would skip the FBK Games next month out of caution due to a muscle problem. “Recently, I sustained a muscle strain during my training. Following a medical evaluation, me and my team have decided to avoid any risks which can aggravate the injury,” Chopra posted on Twitter.

The Fanny Blankers-Koen Games, a World Athletics Continental Tour Gold level competition, will take place on June 4 in Hengelo, Netherlands. The 25-year-old, who started the season off perfectly by winning the Doha Diamond League on May 5 with a throw of 88.67 metres, will probably return to competition on June 13 at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Turku, Finland.

Writing on his Twitter handle Neeraj said, “Unfortunately, it means that I have to withdraw from the FBK Games, in Hengelo. Wishing the organisers and the tournament all the success. Injuries are part of the journey, but it’s never easy. I am on the road to recovery, and will aim to be back on the track in June, Thank You for all your support.”
