New Faces, New Horizons; A Glimpse of the 8 New Captains for ODI World Cup 2023

ODI World Cup 2023: If Kane Williamson is unable to recover from his knee injury in time for the ICC Men’s ODI Cricket World Cup 2023, scheduled to commence in India on October 5, the tournament will feature 10 fresh captains. In this scenario, let’s have a look at these 8 new leaders, ranging from India’s Rohit Sharma to Pakistan’s Babar Azam.

Captains for ODI World Cup 2023

1. Rohit Sharma – India

Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian cricket team, took over the leadership role from Virat Kohli in 2022. He had a dream performance the last time tournament took place where he scored five centuries. He has played 244 ODI matches and scored 9,837 runs at an average of 48.7.

2. Babar Azam – Pakistan

Babar Azam, the captain of the Pakistan cricket team, succeeded Sarfaraz Ahmed as skipper after the 2019 World Cup. Known as one of the best batters of the modern day generation, he has scored 5,089 runs in 100 ODI matches at an average of 59.17. He is having a good form since last couple of years.

3. Pat Cummins – Australia

Pat Cummins, the captain of the Australian cricket team, took over the role from Aaron Finch after the 2019 World Cup. He is a fast bowler and has taken 124 wickets in 74 matches at an average of 5.21 with the average of 27.6.

4. Jos Buttler – England

Jos Buttler, the captain of the England ODI cricket team, assumed the position from Eoin Morgan following the 2019 World Cup. He is a prolific batter across the formats and has been the centre figure of batting unit. He has played 165 matches and scored 4647 runs at an average of 41.5.

5. Temba Bavuma – South Africa

Temba Bavuma, the captain of the South African cricket team, stepped into the role following the retirement of Faf du Plessis after the 2019 World Cup. He is relatively new to the format as he has played 26 matches and scored 1150 runs at an average of 52.3.

6. Tom Latham – New Zealand

Tom Latham, the captain of the New Zealand cricket team, is poised to lead the 2019 World Cup runners-up in the event that Kane Williamson is unable to recover from his injury. He made his ODI debut in 2012 and has played 130 matches, scoring 3742 runs at an average of 35.5

7. Dasun Shanaka – Sri Lanka

Dasun Shanaka will be leading the Sri Lanka team this year. In the previous World Cup, the team was under the leadership of Dimuth Karunaratne. He has played 61 ODI matches and scored 1150 runs at an average of 23.5 while picking 23 wickets.

8. Hashmatullah Shahidi – Afghanistan

Hashmatullah Shahidi, the captain of the Afghanistan cricket team, has taken over the captaincy from Mohammad Nabhi, who held the position in 2019. He has played 59 ODI matches and scored 1637 runs at an average of 32.1.
