New Zealand vs India, 1st ODI: Tom Latham’s Strom gives New Zealand 1-0 over India, Blackcaps win by 7 wickets

New Zealand beat India by 7 wickets in the first One Day International at Eden Park in Auckland. Chasing a total of 307 runs, New Zealand didn’t get a good start after debutant Umran Malik picked two early wickets.

Later skipper Kane Williamson stitched an unbeaten 221-run partnership with Tom Latham to take the Blackcaps home.

Tom Latham adjudged as player of the match for his 145-run knock that included 19 fours and five sixes. On the other hand, Kane Williamson scored 94 runs.

“It was just one of those days when everything came off well. Built a partnership with Kane and had a bit of fun, just reacted to things and it paid off. It’s about being in strong positions and react to what they were bowling. Was able to find the gaps. The preparation has been ideal, it’s been nice and was able to hit the ball right today. Sundar was getting some turn, found a bit hard to play against him. It’s a small ground and we could capitalize at the end. Don’t know where that came from, just one of those days,” said Tom Latham post-match.

Earlier India had a 124-run opening partnership between Shikhar Dhawan (72) and Shubman Gill (50) followed by Shreyas Iyer (80) took India to 306 in 50 overs.

Washington Sundar played a quickfire 37 runs while Sanju Samson scored 36. Tim Southee and Lokie Ferguson picked three wickets each for New Zealand while Adam Milne scalped one.
