Novak Djokovic: Due to his unwillingness to receive the Covid vaccine, the Serbian tennis player was detained in January. Despite winning a judicial battle, he was deported from the nation ten days later but his visa was revoked. However, as per the new update, his ban is overturned and he might visit the country for tournament next year. The country had some of the strictest pandemic restrictions in the world, which is why it also earned the title of “Fortress Australia.”
Novak Djokovic’s was banned for three years
In January, when Djokovic landed in Australia, Covid cases were on the rise and entry requirements mandated vaccinations for all visitors, barring those with legal medical exemptions. According to the government, he did not meet the criteria for entrance, and as a result, his visa was revoked and he was immediately prohibited from entering the nation for three years.
As per the reports, Immigration Minister Andrew Giles, whose government took office in May, has lifted the prohibition and is prepared to provide Mr. Djokovic a visa. The head of Tennis Australia, Craig Tiley, expressed confidence earlier on Tuesday that Djokovic will participate in the Open the following year.
Immigration Minister issues a big statement
“I know Novak wants to come and play and to get back to competing,” he told the Australian Press. “He loves Australia and it’s where he’s had the best success.”
Earlier this year, the tennis champion said that he had flown to Australia under the impression that he had received the necessary medical exemptions. On the other hand, his visa was revoked the following morning when he was detained and questioned by border agents in Melbourne on January 5.
Novak Djokovic ‘s ban had caused stir amongst his fans
Djokovic was transferred to a renowned immigration prison facility, where he remained while contesting the conviction in court. After the court overturned the visa cancellation judgement, the then-immigration minister, Alex Hawke, invoked extraordinary powers to do so again, claiming it was “in the public interest.” The decision was applauded by many in Australia, but it also caused a stir among his followers who gathered outside his hotel.
