ODI World Cup 2023: Every cricket fan is aware that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) provides the International Cricket Council (ICC) with a huge financial contribution and that the two organisations have a close relationship. However, given that the tax-related difficulties will not be rectified as soon as possible, the ICC will now need to decide whether to hold the 2023 World Cup in India.

Interim tax benefit were given in 2016
Notably, India only hosted the 2016 T20 World Cup after giving the International Cricket Council (ICC) a temporary tax break from the country’s tax officials. While BCCI is currently engaged in a legal dispute over it, ICC held a 10.3% surcharge from India’s revenue share at the time. The BCCI was urged by the world body to provide the necessary tax solutions for the 2023 World Cup, although this seems improbable at the time considering the significant tax deductions made by the ICC in the past from the profits.
A tax bill of 21.84% from the event’s broadcast income, or over US$116 million (Rs. 900 crores) has reportedly already been collected by ICC. The government rejected BCCI’s request for a tax exemption in 2016; this year, it’s possible that the same may happen. It has been reported by the sources that BCCI has already informed ICC that “nothing can be done” in this regard, meaning that the event may be moved.
ODI World Cup 2023’s future in India uncertain
Although the administration has not yet decided whether to forgo the exemptions this time, there have been no signs that anything has changed. Given India’s large population and the country’s intense interest in the game, it is anticipated that the World Cup’s relocation will generate a lot of discussion among cricket players.
