WTC Final 2023: In response to a potential threat posed by oil protestors, the International Cricket Council (ICC) took precautionary measures for the World Test Championship Final between India and Australia. The ICC, concerned about potential vandalism to the field and pitch, made arrangements for two pitches at the Kennington Oval cricket stadium.
ICC’s plan for the WTC Final 2023
To ensure the safety and security of the event, the stadium’s security has been significantly enhanced. Additionally, the ICC has made amendments to section 6.4 of the Playing Condition regulation to accommodate the provision of an alternative pitch.
In the event of any obstruction on the field, a thorough assessment will be conducted to determine its playability. If the field remains suitable for play, the match will continue on the same surface. However, if the field becomes unsuitable, officials will assess the condition of the alternative field and make a decision regarding the feasibility of continuing the match there.
The consent of both captains, Pat Cummins and Rohit Sharma has been sought to ensure mutual agreement. If both parties concur to proceed despite the field being affected, the game will proceed accordingly. However, if an agreement cannot be reached, there is a possibility of the match being cancelled or abandoned. The unfolding events during the WTC 2023 final will be crucial in determining the course of action.
Match referee tasked with big responsibility
As per regulation 6.4.7, the ICC match referee is responsible for consistently informing the captains and the head of the ground authority about the ongoing situation during the decision-making process described earlier. The highest-ranking official of the ground authority will ensure timely and appropriate public announcements are made.
The highly anticipated WTC final is scheduled to commence at 3 pm IST from June 7 to June 11 at the Oval in London. Additionally, a reserve day has been allocated to account for potential weather interruptions that may affect the course of the match.
