Olympics 2028: The International Cricket Council (ICC) has suggested the Los Angeles Olympic Games organising committee to include six-team T20 games for both men and women as part of its attempt to introduce cricket to major international sporting events (LA28).
There has been speculation that cricket may once again be overlooked for inclusion in the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028. However, sources have learned that no decision has yet been made and that the International Olympic Committee (IOC) will make a final determination in October after the LA28 organisers have finalised the list of new sports by March.
Six teams to participate in Olympics 2028
The IOC session in Mumbai, which is anticipated to take place in or around October of this year, would then approve these. If the concept is adopted, the six participating teams would most likely be the top six in the ICC men’s and women’s T20 rankings on a cut-off date. According to reports, the ICC is now discussing options with the LA28 organisers before agreeing on a tournament format.
T20 was proposed as the format since LA28 and the IOC both notified the ICC that the format should be one in which a world championship is contested (excluding T10, for example), have a brief length (excluding ODIs), and have a significant degree of fan involvement.
Plan consists of including only six teams
The main argument in favour of six-team competitions put out by the ICC is the IOC’s initiative to reduce costs, which is described in its strategy plan dubbed “Olympic Agenda 2020 5.” It has been determined that the simplest way to save expenses is to minimise bloated team sizes across specialties and the total contingents. Consequently, fewer athletes will compete in the 2024 Paris Olympics than did so in 2021 Tokyo, with 10,500 athletes competing.
LA28 also advised the ICC that only the best athletes should compete in the proposed tournament and that the size of the event could not be compromised. The top six teams from both the male and female genders were the only ones permitted to play in the competition because of this. Shah, who chairs the financial and commercial affairs committee and represents the BCCI on the ICC board, was deliberately chosen and comes out as a calculated move.
