The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) is proudly putting forward the Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay National Welfare Fund for Sportspersons. The initiative aims to support exceptional athletes of bygone times, who once painted a picture of glory for India in international sports and are now facing financial hardship. Furthermore, the scheme also extends to the currently active sportspersons, individually or as a group.
The Wide Array of Benefits
The scheme has several advantages, aiming to improve the lives of sportspersons in need. This includes a one-time ex-gratia financial aid capped at Rs. 5 lakh, and a monthly pension of Rs. 5000 for former renowned sportspersons experiencing financial distress. Furthermore, an ex-gratia financial aid up to Rs. 10 lakh is offered to athletes who suffer injuries during training or sports events. Moreover, financial support for medical treatment for outstanding sportspersons or their indigent family members can go up to Rs. 10 lakh. Lastly, the scheme also provides financial assistance to coaches, support staff, and match officials connected with senior category national teams and championships.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible for the scheme, applicants must be serving or retired sportspersons, including related professionals such as sports doctors, physiotherapists, coaches, and match officials. They should have represented India at national or international level sports competitions. The annual income, from all sources, of the applicant or their family must not exceed Rs. 4 LPA. Additional considerations include injuries sustained during training or competitions, any disabilities incurred, indigent circumstances of the applicants or their dependents, and dependents of deceased sportspersons.
The Application Procedure
Applying to the scheme is straightforward. Applicants must complete the prescribed form as detailed in the scheme guidelines and submit it offline. This is to be addressed to the Member-Secretary of the Executive Committee and sent to the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, Shastri Bhawan, New Delhi. Essential documents to accompany the application include a photo of the applicant, proof of age or date of birth, proof of achievements or participation in sports events, bank details, income details, and a signed declaration.
