Paris Olympics 2024: 7 August 2024 might have been the worst day in Indian sporting history. It started with Vinesh Phogat being suspended from the 50KG freestyle final and ended with Avinash Sable failing to secure his medal in the 3000m steeplechase.
It was a hard day to be an Indian sports fan when everything was going against you no matter what. The day started badly when the Indian hockey team failed to win their semifinal match against Germany.
After that, it was all downhill. A confirmed medal was snatched away from us, the Table Tennis team lost even after a good fight, Mirabai failed to defend her silver medal and even the Indian cricket team faced a historic loss.
Paris Olympics 2024: A Day To Forget
In the morning, IOC released a statement stating that Vinesh Phogat had been suspended from the 50KG freestyle wrestling final as she failed to make the weight on the second day.
The Indian wrestler tried all night to make the weight but was over the limit by just 100 grams. WFI and even Vinesh herself appealed against the decision and so far nothing has been fruitful.
It was followed by the girl’s table tennis team of Manika Batra, Sreeja Akula, and Archana Kamath losing to Germany and getting knocked out of the Paris Olympics 2024.
The day got even worse when Mirabai Chanu came fourth in a 49kg weightlifting event and missed a podium finish by just 1kg. Later, Mirabai stated that she was on her third day of the period and was not feeling particularly strong that day.
Historic Series Loss
On the other side of the sports spectrum, even the Indian cricket team had a bad day. They lost their first bilateral series against Sri Lanka in 27 years. Skipper Rohit Sharma and coach Gautam Gambhir came under a lot of scrutiny as the Blues finished their ODI campaign of 2024 with a historic loss.
We can hope for better days in the future, but one thing is certain August 7, 2024, will be one of the darkest days in Indian sports history.
