Paris Olympics 2024 might have faced their biggest controversy when Italian female boxer Angela Carini faced off against Algerian Imane Khelif. A simple bout got controversial when it was revealed that Imane had failed his gender test previously and is a biological male.
Angela forfeited the match only 46 seconds into the first round and was left in tears on the mat. It was a disgraceful moment in the history of the Olympics and something that has tarnished the reputation permanently.
The controversy gets even more heated when you realize that Khelif was disqualified from the 2023 World Championship over failing an unspecified gender eligibility test. According to IBA, Khelif was disqualified because of XY chromosomes in his body.
Meanwhile International Olympic Committee had no problem with it and allowed Khelif to participate.
‘It Is Unjust’
Carini abandoned the fight after receiving just one punch from Khelif because of the risk of a broken nose. The Italian boxer was distraught and left the ring while saying “This Is Unjust.”
Carini later described the punch as “I have never been hit so hard in my life. “After the second punch, after years of experience, I felt a strong pain in the nose. I said enough because I didn’t want to. I couldn’t finish the fight after the punch to the nose. So it was better to put an end to it.”
Carini was still proud of her efforts and the whole world was with her. “It’s not a defeat for me – for me if you go in the ring you have already won, regardless of everything else. I’m not here to judge. It’s not up to me to say if it’s fair or not fair. I just did my job. I managed to leave with my head held high.” Carini concluded.
