WFI President Sanjay Singh was disappointed by the wrestling performance in Paris Olympics 2024 and blamed it on 'anti-national elements.'

Paris Olympics 2024 was an unlucky tournament for Indian wrestling. Almost every wrestler performed well, but somehow we were only able to secure one bronze medal in the event.

It felt like the world was against Indian wrestling and for the first time since 2012, wrestling won’t win a single medal in the Summer Games. But Aman Sehrawat broke that deadlock and won the bronze medal in his category at the last possible wrestling event.

Sanjay Singh, president of the Wrestling Federation Of India(WFI) looked back at the campaign with a disappointment. In his opinion, wrestling was supposed to get 5-6 medals but was not able to because of some anti-national incidents.

‘Anti-National Elements’

Sanjay Singh blamed the protest as it hampered with the practice of the wrestlers. He also blamed Vinesh Phogat for that but stated that she was forced to do that because of some anti-national elements.

Sanjay stated “If you look at it from the other angle, the protests that took place for 14-15 months, the entire wrestling fraternity was disturbed. Let alone one category, the wrestlers in other categories struggled as they could not practice without national and international tournaments. Hence, the wrestlers could not perform well.

There was no reason for protest. Some anti-national elements conspired with it as Indian wrestling was soaring to new heights. They knew in the upcoming Olympics, wrestling would win 6 medals so they conspired to stage a protest to derail our plans.”

Sanjay further blamed politics and said “I’m saying it from the start, keep politics aside from sports. Till the time there will be politics in sports, we will continue getting a mere 5-6 medals in the Olympics. Let the politicians do politics. I believe people looking for politics shouldn’t make statements regarding sports.”

Paris Olympics 2024: Unlucky!

The Indian wrestling contingent was severely unlucky in their quest for a medal in the Paris Olympics 2024. Nisha Dahiya was injured mid-match when she was leading the bout by 8-2.

Vinesh was suspended before the finals after failing her weight test by 100 grams. The fans are still waiting for the decision by the CAS and with every passing day, the chances are getting slimmer.
