Paris Olympics 2024: August 6 might have been the best day for Indian fans during the ongoing Olympic event. Vinesh Phogat fought and came out on top against everything that was thrown her way. She came out victorious as all the odds were against her.
But August 7 started with a heartbreak when it was announced that Vinesh had been disqualified from the 50 kg freestyle wrestling event for being 100 grams over the weight limit from the allowed limit.
After her semi-final win Vinesh had a little bit of water and food which resulted in her weight spiking a little bit. At night, Vinesh was 2 kg over the allowed limit and she shed most of her weight except the last 100 grams.
Amidst all this chaos, some theories have come out stating that Vinesh still could have gotten the silver medal. Let’s find out what the Wrestling Federation states regarding these situations.
Silver Despite Being Over The Weight?
After the disqualification news, many fans have started that Vinesh could have cited an injury and should have settled for the silver if she was not able to make the weight. But there is a catch.
According to United World Wrestling, if the wrestler is injured mid-match and forfeits from the tournament, she does not have to attend the second weigh-in and she keeps her point.
But if something happens outside the match or any other type of injury after the first day of the competition, the wrestler will have to attend the second weigh-in. Otherwise, he/she will be eliminated from the competition and will be ranked last, without rank.
