Paris Olympics 2024: It was a heartbreaking moment for Lakshya Sen when he lost the bronze medal match against Lee Zii Jia. Sen missed out on joining the elite list of badminton players who have won medals at Olympic games.
Lakshya had a wonderful run till the semi-finals where he defeated everyone that came in his way. But his lack of experience came into the display in those two medal matches where he crumbled a little bit in a pressure situation.
It was a tough week for Lakshya as he lost the semifinal against World No.1 Viktor Axelsen and on Monday lost the third-place match against Malaysian Lee Zii Jia. It was a tough loss to take as Sen had already won the first set and was in a commendable position in the second set as well.
‘Should Have Closed The Game’
The momentum of the match finished in the second set when Jia came back after trailing for a very long time. At that point, Sen’s inexperience came into focus and he lost the league.
Even Lakshya knew that he was in a commanding position and should have won the match. In the post-match interview, Lakshya was heartbroken and was at a loss for words. In a broken voice, he was able to construct only a few sentences to express his emotions.
“I had my chances in the second set. I could’ve done better. Credit to him, he played better. I think I came well-prepared for this game. It has been quite a tough week overall. I was ready to give my 100 percent.”
Paris Olympics 2024: ‘Couldn’t Refocus’
Lakshya stated that his injury affected him a little bit and he was not able to refocus because of the blood. The blood spilled on the court was breaking momentum a little bit.
“If I would have closed the first game, then I would have had a better chance of closing the match. In the second game also, I started well but couldn’t keep the lead,” Lakshya stated.
