Paris Olympics 2024: Indian star Neeraj Chopra is keeping his fingers crossed and is hoping that Vinesh Phogat gets her deserving medal. Just like everyone, he is also desperately waiting for the CAS verdict.
Vinesh was suspended from the 50kg freestyle wrestling event after she was found 100 grams over the weight limit on the day of the final. Vinesh, alongside WFI, has filed an appeal which was accepted by the CAS.
There was a three-hour-long hearing in the ad-hoc division of the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Friday and a decision is supposed to be arriving by 9:30 PM IST on Saturday. And everyone is desperately waiting for the decision.
‘Don’t Forget Her’
Chopra, who claimed his second consecutive Olympic medal wants the medal to be on Vinesh’s neck. He is also afraid that if there is no medal, fans will forget about her sooner rather than later.
He stated “If she gets the medal, it would be very good. If things had not panned out the way they did, she would have had the medal. I hope she gets it because if you don’t have it around your neck, that thing stays in your heart.
“Today people might say that she is our champion but, I feel that till one is not on the podium they will be forgotten after a few days. So, I hope she gets the medal. I just hope whether she gets the medal or not, people don’t forget what she did for the country.”
Paris Olympics 2024: Worldwide Support
Many top athletes have come forward and supported Vinesh while condemning the decision of disqualification. Former American Olympic gold medallist Jordan Burroughs, Nigerian women’s wrestling coach Purity Akuh, and many more have come and supported the Indian wrestler.
