Paris Olympics 2024

Paris Olympics 2024: The magnificent opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics 2024 highlighted diversity and unity. The famous Seine River served as the course for the athletes’ procession, and Paris was converted into a magnificent amphitheatre. This fascinating opening to the 33rd Olympic Games on Friday featured France’s vast cultural diversity, revolutionary energy, superb craftsmanship, and architectural marvels.

A Dreamy ‘Parade of Nations’

Athletes from 205 nations and one team of refugees defied tradition by sailing boats down the Seine in the “Parade of Nations.” The athletes persevered with grins and passion despite the intense downpour that threatened to damper spirits. Over 6,800 athletes were carried by 85 boats throughout the six-kilometer procession, which got underway at the Austerlitz Bridge. The Greek contingent arrived first, paying homage to Greece as the Games’ spiritual home, and then the Refugee squad.

India Shines in Traditional Attire

The Indian contingent made a memorable entry, led by two-time Olympic medallist PV Sindhu and table tennis legend A Sharath Kamal, as flag bearers. The women wore elegant sarees, and the men sported traditional kurta-pajama in the national colors. A total of 78 Indian athletes and officials participated in the ceremony, which was a proud moment for India.

The ceremony paid a heartfelt tribute to ‘Hindi’ among the six languages used to honor prominent French women in the ‘Sisterhood’ segment. The celebration also highlighted the renowned craftsmanship of Paris with a glimpse into the workshops of the Monnaie de Paris, where the medals for the Games are being forged. A total of 5,084 medals will be awarded in the 2024 edition, each containing a piece of the Eiffel Tower.

Celebrity Appearances and Thrilling Performances

Star-studded acts dominated the opening ceremony, including a mesmerising performance by American music sensation Lady Gaga. Thomas Jolly, the artistic director, planned the whole thing. A torchbearer traversed the Seine on a zip-wire while circling the city and its landmarks, lending an air of mystery. The event was made more enjoyable by the inclusion of the well-known Minions and a light-hearted section about the missing Mona Lisa floating on the Seine.

Iconic Landmarks and Festive Atmosphere

The boats passed by iconic Paris landmarks such as the restored Cathedral of Notre Dame, which had been damaged by fire five years ago, and the Louvre Museum. The bridges along the parade route featured vibrant dance performances, entertaining fans who gathered at various spots. More than two lakh free tickets were distributed, along with over one lakh sold tickets, ensuring a large and enthusiastic audience.
