Paris Olympics 2024: Representing your nation on the world stage is a proud moment for every sportsperson. No matter what sport you are playing, while wearing your nation’s color, the feeling of pride is the same.
You want to do the best for your country and bring glory to your nation. But if somehow you fail due to something that was not even your fault, it is beyond heartbreaking as your dream crashes down in front of you.
That is exactly what happened when Vinesh Phogat was suspended from the Women’s 50 kg freestyle wrestling event because of 100 grams. This has resulted in outrage from top athletes from all over the world.
‘It Defies Logic’
Indian cricketing icon Sachin Tendulkar has also joined in and demanded for a silver medal for Phogat. He posted a tweet on his ‘X’ profile and was kind of furious as he termed the decision as illogical.
He wrote “Time for an Umpire’s Call! Every sport has rules and those rules need to be seen in context, maybe even revisited at times. Vinesh Phogat qualified fair and square for the finals.
Her disqualification by weight was before the finals, and hence, for her to be robbed of a deserving silver medal defies logic and sporting sense. It would have been understandable if an athlete were to have been disqualified for ethical breaches such as the usage of performance-enhancing drugs. In that case, not being awarded any medal and placed last would be justifiable.”
Paris Olympics 2024: Worldwide Support
Many top athletes have come forward and supported Vinesh while condemning the decision of disqualification. Former American Olympic gold medallist Jordan Burroughs, Nigerian women’s wrestling coach Purity Akuh, and many more have come and supported the Indian wrestler.
