In a last-minute thriller the team USA clinched their 40th gold medal against France to finish at the top of Paris Olympics 2024.

What a dramatic end to a dramatic Summer Games. Paris Olympics 2024 has been dramatic from the beginning and there could not have been a better ending to the event.

Last month, USA’s Diana Taurasi stated that France could give them tough competition. Turns out she knew what she was talking about as the finals of Women’s basketball were an absolute thriller.

The USA team was pushing for their 8th consecutive Olympic gold medal and were pushed to their limits. It was a car crash of a match where every point mattered and in the end, the USA side triumphed by just 1 point.

With this, The USA has trumped China in the medal tally as both countries now have 40 gold medals. The U.S. side has an advantage because they have far more silver medals as compared to China.

Paris Olympics 2024: What A Match

It was an exciting clash where every point was being fought for. It took a superhuman effort from A’ja Wilson who scored 21 points, 12 rebounds, and four blocks for her team. This superhuman effort allowed the team USA to pull away from a 10-point third-quarter deficit and secure a 67-66 win over the host country.

A’ja was the MVP for her team but the team USA should be thankful for the late bucket by Kahleah Copper and crucial block by Breanna Stewart in the dying stages of the game.

Wilson was ecstatic after the win and stated “We just knew what we had to do. We believed in each other and that’s the greatest thing about it.”

Gabby Willams Heartbroken

A’ja was not the only one who had a superhuman kind of game. France’s star Gabby Willams was the star of the match. With 19 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals, and 7-16 FG, she has increased her stocks for the upcoming WNBA.

It was a heartbreaking moment for her as she hit a shot at the buzzer when the score was 67-64 in favor of the USA. But Gabby was just an inch inside the 2-point zone, giving the U.S. a one-point victory in this thriller.
