Boxing event has been cursed for the Paris Olympics 2024 so far. All the controversies so far have been derived from this sport only. Another controversy arose after the Angela Carini and Imane Khelif debacle when Indian boxer Nishant Dev faced off against Mexico’s Marco Verde.
In the 71 Kg category quarter-finals, Marco defeated Nishant with a 4-1 decision which sparked concerns over the scoring system. The scoring system in boxing has always been a point of discussion.
The scoring system is subjective where fans’ and judges’s points of view can differ from each other. But Nishant lost the fight after being dominant in the first two rounds and this has led to the controversy of the judges being biased as well.
An Intense Fight
It was an intense fight between these two where Nishant easily took the first round by 4-1. The second round was a little bit equal but by the looks of it, Nishant trumped that also. That is why it came as a shock when the judge’s bench declared the round in favor of Marco by 2-3.
The third round was the weakest by Nishant because of tiredness and Marco took advantage of that. The match ended with a scoreline of 4-1 in the favour of Marco and people were upset.
Nishant’s coach Surendra Chauhan stated that it was heartbreaking but was optimistic. He stated that Nishant has beaten everyone in the Paris Olympics 2024 and is still young. The duo is now targeting the LA Olympics in 2028.
Paris Olympics 2024: Fans’ Outrage
The decision resulted in an outrage by the fans all over social media. Former World Champion Vijender Singh and Bollywood star Randeep Hooda were also displeased with the decision and displayed their anger towards it.
Fans also came out and supported Nishant stating that the decision was unfair and biased.
