Paris Olympics 2024: A few months earlier, Vinesh Phogat was at the lowest point in her life. She was battling it out against the system, her fans turned against her and she was fighting against her federation with her fellow wrestlers.
On Tuesday, Vinesh once again made headlines, but this time everyone was praising her and was in awe. Vinesh not only defeated World Number 1 Yu Susaki but it was also Susaki’s first loss on the International stage.
It was a historic moment and the whole nation was proud of her. But that does not erase any injustice that was done towards her and other wrestlers. It won’t erase the fact that her own nation turned its back against her in her protest.
The Protest!
A few months ago, Phogat alongside Bajrang Punia and Sakshi Malik led a protest against former WFI President Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The wrestlers accused him of sexually harassing women wrestlers.
In May, these three led a march towards the Parliament and were detained in the process. All the wrestlers were treated brutally in the process and it was a sad sight in Indian wrestling history.
Paris Olympics 2024: Will Win The World!
Bajrang Punia, an Olympic medalist himself, tweeted an emotional reply after Vinesh won her quarterfinal match. He was emotional and it was visible in his tweet where he let all his emotions out.
Punia wrote “Vinesh Phogat is the lioness of India who won back-to-back matches today. Defeated 4-time World Champion and defending Olympic champion. After that, he defeated the former World Champion in the quarterfinals.
But let me tell you one thing, This girl was kicked and crushed in her own country. This girl was dragged on the streets in her country This girl is going to conquer the world but she lost to the system in this country.”
Phogat will now face Cuba’s Yusneylys Guzman Lopez in the Paris Olympics 2024 semi-final and it will start at 10:15 IST. This is her maiden Olympic semifinal and if she wins, she will be confirmed of at least one medal.
