Pat Cummins: After Aaron Finch announced his retirement from the 50-over game, Pat Cummins was chosen to captain Australia in ODIs. On Tuesday, Cricket Australia gave Cummins the go-ahead to be Australia’s 27th ODI captain and also lead the 2023 World Cup in India.
David Warner and Steve Smith are thought to be the leading candidates for the captaincy following Finch’s withdrawal from ODIs. Warner, though, was not eligible since his lifetime leadership ban is still in effect while the board considers changing its code of conduct.
“Pat has done an excellent job since taking on the captaincy of the Test side and we look forward to him leading the one-day team to the 2023 World Cup in India,” said selection chief George Bailey.
Since Shane Warne, who led in 11 ODIs in the late 1990s, Cummins will be the first fast bowler to command Australia’s men’s side in limited overs.
Pat Cummins gives a statement
Despite Cummins’ most recent declaration that he would heavily rely on others to fill in for him during specific series if he were selected as captain, the Australia cricket board has not nominated a deputy captain. “You’d probably need to look at it a little bit differently to perhaps in the past with so much cricket going on, if I was offered it,” In advance of Australia’s ODI skipper being revealed, Cummins stated.
“Just playing every single game isn’t realistic. We’ve got a handful of guys that play all three formats.
“In a year like this, T20 becomes the focus leading to a World Cup. Next year might be different with the one-day World Cup. But with 15 Test matches in the next six months, I don’t think you can expect the captain to play every game just because he is the captain.”
Next month, when the two teams play a three-match series before turning their attention to Test cricket, Australia’s first ODI assignment after Finch’s retirement will be against England.
