ICC ODI World Cup 2023: While Pakistani players were greeted warmly in India as participants in the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, a viral video featuring Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chairman Zaka Ashraf referring to India as an “Dushman Mulk” (Enemy Nation) has surfaced on social media.
PCB Chief’s controversial statement
The Pakistan cricket team arrived in Hyderabad on Wednesday, September 27, and received a warm and enthusiastic welcome from Indian fans. Several Pakistani players, including captain Babar Azam, star bowler Shaheen Afridi, and wicketkeeper-batsman Mohammad Rizwan, expressed their appreciation for the reception they experienced upon their arrival in India.
In a contrasting development, a video featuring PCB chairman Ashraf has circulated on social media, where he can be heard making the reference to India as an “enemy nation.” He can be heard saying, “Players hain inka morale upar rehna chahiye jab ye kisi dushman mulk ya kisi bhi jagah khelne jaayen jahan wo competition ho raha ho, to they should go with the full support of the nation aur unko ek achche tarike se perform kar saken.” (When the players go to an enemy country or where the competition is being held, you should support them so that they can perform well.)

Several users have criticized the PCB chairman for his controversial statement, expressing their disapproval of his use of the term “dushman mulk” (enemy nation). Owing to strained relations, India and Pakistan primarily face each other in multi-nation tournaments such as the World Cup, Asia Cup, and Champions Trophy. The last bilateral series between the two teams took place in 2012-13.
