Pele: According to a declaration signed by outgoing President Jair Bolsonaro on Thursday, Brazil has proclaimed three days of national mourning for the passing of football star Pele. The official statement read, “Official mourning is declared throughout the country, for a period of three days, counted from the date of publication of this Decree, as a sign of regret for the death of Edson Arantes do Nascimento, Pele, a former football player.”

Three days of mourning declared in Brazil

Pele, who was 82 years old, died on Thursday after battling cancer. According to a statement made by Santos Futebol Clube, Pele’s funeral will be held on Monday, January 2, according to the Brazilian news portal G1. In Vila Belmiro, Santos, at the Urbano Caldeira Stadium, his body will be buried.

The funeral service for Pele is scheduled to begin at 10 am on Monday and last until 10 am on Tuesday, January 3. (local time). when Santos’ streets will be the scene of a procession.

Huge legacy of Pele in football

Pele is regarded as one of the greatest players to ever step foot on a football field. His real name is Edson Arantes do Nascimento. He is the only player to have won three World Cups, taking home the trophy in 1958, 1962, and 1970.

While Pele was playing at Pacaembu and Morumbi, Brazilian President-elect Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva described it as a “honour” to have seen it. In a series of tweets, he honoured the football great.
