National Sports Day: On August 29th, the Indian sports fraternity observes a significant day, marked annually to honour the birth anniversary of the hockey icon Dhyan Chand. Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his wishes on this important occasion, offering his respects to the legendary hockey player who stood as one of India’s earliest international hockey stars. PM Modi conveyed his best wishes to all athletes on this day, simultaneously commemorating the legacy of Dhyan Chand. Home Minister Amit Shah also wished on Twitter.
PM Modi wishes on National Sports Day
Today, National Sports Day is being observed nationwide, paying homage to the legendary Major Dhyan Chand, renowned for his remarkable goal-scoring skills and exceptional ball control. Major Dhyan Chand, a three-time Olympic gold medalist, played a pivotal role in the Indian hockey team‘s triumph at the 1928, 1932, and 1936 Olympics. Across his 185 international appearances, he contributed 570 goals to India’s tally.
PM Modi took to his X (previously Twitter) handle to extend his wishes to Indian athletes on the occasion of National Sports Day. He wrote, “On National Sports Day, my greetings to all sportspersons. India is proud of their contributions to the nation. I pay homage to Major Dhyan Chand Ji as well on his birth anniversary.”

Dhyan Chand’s prolific goal-scoring abilities earned him the nickname of a ‘hockey magician’ in international newspapers. His remarkable ball control and exceptional passing skills garnered widespread attention and admiration. Union Home Minister Amit Shah extended his greetings to all fellow countrymen on this occasion.
Taking to X, he wrote, “Best wishes to all the countrymen on ‘National Sports Day’. Salute to ‘Major Dhyanchand ji’ on his birth anniversary who surprised the whole world with his talent. The bravery, courage and skill of Major Dhyanchand ji took Indian sports to new heights. His unparalleled dedication towards hockey will always inspire generations to come.”
