Grand Master Praggnanandhaa Rameshbabu registered a historic win against World Number 1 Magnus Carlsen. It was his first-ever victory reigning World Champion Grand Champion.

Praggnanandhaa is the new leader of the ongoing Norway Chess 2024 tournament after defeating Carlsen in Wednesday’s third round. USA-based Fabiano Caruana is in second position.

Praggnanandhaa has already defeated Carlsen quite a few times in rapid/exhibition games. But this was his maiden victory over World Number 1 in a classical game. Classical chess is also known as slow chess. It allows a player a significant amount of time to make their moves, usually at least one hour.

Praggnanandhaa: The Sole Leader

The 18-year-old Indian prodigy is now the sole leader of the Norway Chess 2024 tournament. He now has 5.5 points after three rounds. The Indian Grand Master was playing with white pieces and this loss has pushed Carlsen back to the fifth spot in the table.

World Number 2 Fabiano Caruana of the USA defeated the reigning world champion Ding Liren of China. This loss has shockingly pushed Liren to the bottom of the table. American national Hikaru Nakamura won his game against French national Alireza Firouzja to climb to the third spot in the standings.

Praggnanandhaa wanted to push even harder and stated “I don’t know, I will have to check. I didn’t think I played really well. I did find some best moves. It’s not my best game for sure.”

Siblings Leader

On the other side, praggnanandhaa’s sister R Vaishali is also holding the top spot in the women’s competition with 5.5 points, the same as her brother. She drew her game against Anna Muzychuk to hold the top spot.
