Prithvi Shaw: Star batter’s hopes of making a comeback to the Indian side were dashed after a forgettable IPL 2023 season, leading to his exclusion from the West Indies tour and the Asian Games. To regain his form and position, he took an alternate path by joining Northamptonshire in London for the Royal London One Day Cup. Unfortunately, his debut on Friday didn’t go as planned, as he was dismissed in an bizarre manner during his innings of 34 against Gloucestershire in the group-B tie in Cheltenham.
Prithvi Shaw gets out hit-wicket
Following a dismal start, Northamptonshire faced a daunting target of 279. Their innings crumbled as they lost five wickets for a mere 30 runs in the 10th over. However, a partnership between Shaw and captain Lewis McManus attempted to revive the team’s fortunes. Unfortunately, the 24-run stand came to an abrupt and unlucky end when the Indian batsman was dismissed in a rather embarrassing style.
During the last delivery of the 16th over, Paul van Meekeren, the Gloucestershire bowler, sent a shortish ball towards Shaw. Attempting to hit it over fine leg for a big score, Shaw missed making any contact with the ball. As a consequence, he lost his balance and fell awkwardly on the ground, unintentionally hitting his own stumps. This unfortunate incident led to his dismissal via hit wicket.

Following Shaw’s unusual dismissal, Northamptonshire’s captain Lewis McManus and bowler Tom Taylor displayed remarkable resilience, forging an 84-run partnership for the seventh wicket, bringing their team tantalizingly close to a sensational victory. Despite Taylor’s outstanding century and the lower order’s commendable fight, they fell short by 23 runs.
Before his debut on Friday, Shaw participated in a practice match where he impressed with a thunderous 39-ball 65. Shaw’s last appearance in the Indian jersey was back in July 2021 when he was part of a second-string Indian side during the Sri Lanka tour.
