ICC ODI World Cup 2023: Ravichandran Ashwin will participate in his third 50-overs World Cup after being included in India’s 15-man team as a substitute for the injured Axar Patel. This last-minute adjustment was made by India just hours before the deadline of September 28 (today). Ashwin, 36, was drafted into India’s ODI squad for the three-match series against Australia, and picked up four wickets from two games, including 3/41 in Indore, making him a natural replacement for Axar, who is still recovering from a left quadriceps strain and is expected to be out for three weeks.
R Ashwin joined team for ICC ODI World Cup 2023
When Ashwin arrived in Guwahati with the Indian squad to practise ahead of their World Cup warm-up game against England on Saturday, Axar did not. The ICC quickly acknowledged it in an official post. “After suffering a left quadriceps strain during India’s Asia Cup Super Four match against Bangladesh, Axar Patel was unable to recover in time for the World Cup. As a result, the spin-bowling all-rounder missed the Asia Cup final,” the ICC stated in an official release.
India will play the first match on 8 October
India’s World Cup campaign kicks off against Australia on October 8 in Chennai, where the grounds have been slow and aided spin, and Ashwin, who has played several matches at the site for India and Chennai Super Kings, may come in useful for skipper Rohit Sharma. Ashwin, the side’s lone specialist off-spinner, contributes 155 wickets from 115 One-Day Internationals.
