Former World No.1 and 22-time Grand Slam champion, Rafael Nadal, has confirmed his withdrawal from the 2024 Australian Open due to a hip injury sustained during the Brisbane International. Nadal, who won the Australian Open in 2009 and 2022, faced a setback in his quarter-final match against Australia’s Jordan Thompson, where he suffered a hip injury. Despite a valiant effort, Nadal lost the match 5-7, 7-6 (8/6), 6-3. An MRI revealed a micro-tear in a muscle, not related to his previous injury. Nadal expressed his inability to compete at the highest level in five-set matches and announced his return to Spain for treatment and rest.
Injury Update: Nadal’s Statement on Micro Tear
In a detailed statement on X (formerly Twitter), Nadal shared insights into his injury, stating, “During my last match in Brisbane, I had a small problem on a muscle that, as you know, made me worried. Once I got to Melbourne, I had the chance to make an MRI, and I have a micro-tear on a muscle, not in the same part where I had the injury, and that’s good news. Right now, I am not ready to compete at the maximum level of exigence in 5 sets matches. I’m flying back to Spain to see my doctor, get some treatment, and rest.”
