Rahul Dravid: The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) may consider naming V.V.S. Laxman as the team’s next head coach once Rahul Dravid’s contract, which is now valid until the 2023 ODI World Cup, ends. As per the report, if Dravid chooses against asking for a contract renewal, Laxman, who is now the Head of Cricket at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) in Bengaluru, may step in to lead the men’s team.
VVS Laxman to replace Rahul Dravid?
The Indian squad is now led by 48-year-old Laxman in Dravid’s absence. He accompanied the team on their brief tour to Zimbabwe, as well as for the June 2022 bilateral series against Ireland and the first T20I game against England. Dravid was also a member of the Indian team during the time of his illness with Covid-19 at the T20 Asia Cup in the UAE in 2022. In November 2022, just after the T20 World Cup came to an end, he also travelled to New Zealand as the team’s head coach for their white-ball tour.
In addition to helping to nurture the next generation of players at the NCA, Laxman travelled to the victorious 2022 World Cup with the India U-19 team and actively contributed to the team’s victory there. Additionally, the source noted that divided coaching would not be implemented straight once. A senior BCCI official was quoted as saying, “Has that happened in Indian cricket before?” when questioned about the potential of split coaching being used.
Rahul Dravid’s tenure as coach
Since taking over for Ravi Shastri as the Indian team’s head coach in November 2021, Dravid has had a lacklustre run. Other than losing the Test and ODI series in South Africa and delaying the fifth Test against England in Birmingham, they failed to advance to the 2022 T20 Asia Cup final and fell to England in the T20 World Cup semifinals.
