Riots break out in Paris: Following France’s defeat against Argentina in the World Cup final, riots erupted in a number of French cities. After France’s 4-2 penalty shootout loss to Argentina in Qatar, thousands of football fans flooded the streets of Paris, Nice, and Lyon.

Even as police officers worked to maintain law and order, videos shared on social media revealed widespread unrest and turmoil on the streets. Rocks and fireworks were being thrown at police officers. A woman in Lyon was allegedly assaulted while attempting to drive through the riots, according to a tweet.

Violence breaks out in France

According to the reports, when chaos erupted following the World Cup loss, armed police used tear gas on the streets of Paris. Following the game, thousands of football supporters flooded the streets. After the heated game, riot officers and fans clashed on the famed Champs-Elysees in the French capital as flares were fired and rockets shot into the sky.

Social media users shared videos of the riots in which chaos can be seen on the streets of Paris and Lyon as residents run from the police’s tear gas canisters. Police could be heard ordering protesters to turn around in one of the videos as water cannons allegedly moved in to disperse the throng.

Police allegedly used tear gas on football fans in Lyon as rioting broke out throughout the city, according to the report. In order to ensure security as Les Bleus faced Argentina in the World Cup final, some 14,000 police personnel were deployed across the nation, according to officials. Supporters throwing rocks, bottles, and pyrotechnics at police before they were attacked with tear gas created chaotic scenes.

Argentina won their third World Cup title

In the penalty shootout versus France on Sunday in Qatar, Argentina won with a score of 4-2 overall. Since their victory in Mexico City in 1986, which was motivated by Diego Maradona, the nation has won three World Cups. It was their first trophy they had won, back in 1978.

Several World Cup games recently saw the start of riots across Europe. Riots broke out in a number of French and Belgian cities on December 15 after France’s resounding 2-0 semifinal victory over Morocco put an end to Morocco’s World Cup participation.
