Rohit Sharma: When the seasoned opener Rohit Sharma took the pitch for Team India in a Twenty20 International for the first time since the devastating World Cup 2022 loss to England, a lot was expected of him. In the opening match of the series against Afghanistan in Mohali on Thursday, Rohit led the team without Virat Kohli for the first time in fourteen months. He opened the innings with his partner-in-crime, Shubman Gill.
Aggressive Batting Display
In the Indian innings, Rohit came down the track and creamed the ball towards mid-off after playing a dot in Fazalhaq Farooqi’s first over. Gill was merely a spectator for the non-striker, as he was observed observing the ball when the Indian opener ignored Rohit’s request for a quick single. Although Gill attempted to send Rohit back, the Indian had already darted in to finish the single. Following the terrible misunderstanding, Rohit became enraged at Gill, which made news.
Post-Match Reflections
When asked about his cheap dismissal in the opening series between India and Afghanistan, Rohit was beaming during the post-match presentation ceremony. “These things happen (on the run-out). When it happens you feel frustrated, you want to be out there and score runs for the team. Everything will not go your way. We won the game, that’s more important. I wanted Gill to carry on, unfortunately, got out after playing a very good little innings,” Rohit said.
