Rohit Sharma: India captain and senior MI batter Rohit Sharma has accused Star Sports, the official Indian Premier League broadcaster, of violating viewers’ privacy. Sharma chastised the broadcaster for following a cricket player’s every move on Twitter on Sunday, May 18. Sharma recently experienced the IPL 2024 with one of his videos going viral. During a conversation with KKR assistant coach Abhishek Nayar, Rohit discussed his future with the Mumbai Indians.
Rumors Spark Controversy
After that, there were a lot of rumors regarding Rohit’s future with MI and in the IPL, so KKR had to remove the video. Prior to the MI’s last IPL group-stage match, Sharma had formally asked the broadcasting team not to record his voice during private conversations with other players and coaches.
A rarely vocal Rohit attacked the broadcaster on Sunday. According to Rohit, the necessity and desire for exclusive content shouldn’t come at the expense of violating individuals’ privacy. “The lives of cricketers have become so intrusive that cameras are now recording every step and conversation we are having in privacy with our friends and colleagues, at training or on match days,” Rohit Sharma said on Twitter.
Privacy Breach Highlighted
“Despite asking Star Sports to not record my conversation, it was and was also then played on air, which is a breach of privacy. The need to get exclusive content and focused only on views and engagement will one day break the trust between the fans, cricketers and cricket. Let better sense prevail,” concluded Sharma on his post.
Sharma is hardly the first to criticize the media in general. Since the birth of their daughter Vamika, Virat Kohli and Anushka Sharma have been extremely strict with the media, asking them not to take pictures of her. Prior to the 2024 Indian Premier League, Virat had actually stated that he felt normal again after taking a two-month hiatus from media and cricket.
