Rohit Sharma: Following the humiliating defeat against Australia in the one-off title clash, Indian captain Rohit Sharma has expressed his desire for a three-match World Test Championship (WTC) final. He believes that it would be more suitable for the next cycle if the WTC final was played as a series of three matches rather than a single Test.
What did Rohit Sharma say?
Two years ago, India faced defeat against New Zealand in the WTC final of the 2019-21 cycle. In their second appearance in the final, India failed to perform up to the mark, resulting in Australia securing another trophy for their already impressive collection. India allowed Australia to amass a score of 469 runs in their first innings, while struggling to keep up with it. Eventually, India was dismissed for a total of 234 runs.
Speaking in the post-match conference, Rohit Sharma said, “I would like to play the 3-Test match series for the WTC Final. We worked hard and we fought but we played just 1 game. I think a 3-match series would be ideal in the next WTC cycle.”
Considering the growing number of cricket fixtures and the challenges that a three-Test series would pose to the schedule of any host nation, it is improbable that Rohit’s desire will be fulfilled in the near future. Wasim Khan, the ICC’s general manager of cricket, mentioned last month that although the structure is under constant review, current feedback from members suggests that the league format and one-off final are functioning effectively and thus remain unchanged.
Rohit Sharma discloses the reason of defeat
Rohit Sharma also attributed India’s resounding loss to Australia in the World Test Championship to subpar bowling performance in the first innings. However, he emphasized that the team’s commendable efforts over the past two years cannot be undermined. On the final day, as India resumed their chase, Steve Smith made a brilliant catch in the slips to dismiss Virat Kohli for 49 runs off Scott Boland’s delivery. With 280 runs still required for victory, India managed to add only 70 runs in a slightly extended morning session, as the Australian bowlers dominated the proceedings.
