Sachin Tendulkar, the cricketing legend, was officially appointed as the ‘national icon’ by the Election Commission on Wednesday. This move is part of the Election Commission’s efforts to promote voter awareness in anticipation of the upcoming Lok Sabha election in 2024. The announcement took place during an event held in New Delhi, which was graced by the presence of Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Shri Anup Chandra Pandey and Shri Arun Goel.
EC appoints Sachin Tendulkar as national icon
The Election Commission (EC) and Tendulkar entered into a three-year Memorandum of Understanding. Within the framework of this three-year arrangement, Tendulkar will actively participate in enhancing voter awareness. This collaboration aims to address the obstacles arising from reduced urban and youth engagement in the electoral procedures, a concern acknowledged by the Election Commission.
Sachin said, “We had players from different parts of the country, different religions, different castes, different cultures, and they were all there in the dressing room. But that was our strength.” EC also said in an official release, “We had players from different parts of the country, different religions, different castes, different cultures, and they were all there in the dressing room. Consistently, the EC has involved notable personalities from various fields, bestowing upon them the title of “national icons.” This endeavor is aimed at motivating citizens to actively participate in the electoral proceedings.
In the year 2022, the commission designated actor Pankaj Tripathi as a national icon. Prior to this, prominent individuals such as MS Dhoni, Aamir Khan, and Mary Kom had served as the EC’s national icons during the Lok Sabha elections of 2019. According to the Election Commission, Sachin Tendulkar, a former member of the Rajya Sabha and a recipient of the Bharat Ratna award, is poised to play a significant role in helping voters comprehend their rights and duties in the electoral process.
